Minister Raises Alarm Over Increasing Cases of Kidnapping and Sexual Abuse of Women, Children

The Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has expressed deep concern over the growing incidence of abductions and conflict-related sexual violence affecting women and children across the country.
In a statement issued to mark the 2026 International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, the minister described the trend as a serious threat to human dignity, security, and national development. She stressed that women and children remain among the most vulnerable groups during periods of conflict and instability.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim noted that incidents of kidnapping, sexual exploitation, and other forms of gender-based violence continue to leave devastating physical, emotional, and psychological effects on victims and their families. She emphasized the need for stronger measures to prevent such crimes and ensure justice for survivors.
The minister called on government institutions, security agencies, civil society organizations, community leaders, and development partners to work together in protecting vulnerable populations and addressing the root causes of violence. She urged stakeholders to strengthen support systems for survivors, improve access to justice, and promote accountability for perpetrators.
According to her, eliminating sexual violence in conflict situations requires sustained efforts focused on prevention, protection, and prosecution. She reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to advancing policies and programmes aimed at safeguarding the rights and welfare of women and children.
She further appealed to Nigerians to speak out against all forms of abuse and support initiatives that promote peace, safety, and respect for human rights, especially for women and children affected by conflict and insecurity.
