Tinubu Reaffirms Commitment to Partnership With Faith Leaders for National Unity
By Rukevwe Odeh
President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with religious leaders as part of efforts to foster peace, unity and stability across Nigeria.
The President gave the assurance while receiving the Secretary for Relations with States and International Organisations of the Holy See, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. During the meeting, Tinubu emphasized that religious institutions remain important partners in promoting peaceful coexistence and national development.
He commended Christian and Muslim leaders for their continued efforts in encouraging tolerance and harmony among Nigerians, urging them to remain steadfast in preaching peace. According to the President, the country can never have too much peace or mutual understanding, especially in addressing its security challenges.
Tinubu said his administration would continue to promote interfaith dialogue and ensure that every Nigerian enjoys the constitutional right to freedom of worship. He noted that Nigeria’s religious diversity should be viewed as a source of strength rather than division.
Reflecting on his long-standing relationship with the Catholic Church, the President praised its contributions to education, healthcare and humanitarian services across the country. He recalled supporting the return of mission schools to their original owners during his tenure as Governor of Lagos State, describing faith-based institutions as valuable partners in national development.
The President also expressed appreciation to Pope Leo XIV, describing it as a privilege to have led Nigeria’s delegation to the Pope’s inauguration. He acknowledged the Pontiff’s commitment to promoting global peace and expressed hope that the Pope would visit Nigeria in the future.
On security, Tinubu said the Federal Government remains committed to tackling insecurity through sustained military operations and increased investment in surveillance and youth development to curb violent extremism.
Earlier, Archbishop Gallagher said he was in Nigeria to commemorate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the Holy See. He conveyed the Pope’s gratitude to President Tinubu for attending the inauguration ceremony and praised Nigeria’s strategic importance to the Catholic Church due to its large and vibrant Catholic population.
The Vatican envoy also commended the government’s efforts toward improving national security and strengthening bilateral relations, expressing optimism that cooperation between Nigeria and the Holy See would continue to grow in the years ahead.
