Urhobo Monarchs Meet Defence Minister in Abuja as Efforts Intensify to Resolve Okuama Crisis
By Favour Bibaikefie
ABUJA — Efforts to bring a lasting resolution to the lingering Okuama crisis received a fresh boost on Wednesday as prominent Urhobo traditional rulers met with Nigeria’s Minister of Defence in Abuja.
The high-level delegation of monarchs included the Ohworode of Olomu Kingdom, the Ovie of Agbarha-Warri Kingdom, the Ovie of Umiagwha-Abraka Kingdom, and the Ovie of Udu Kingdom. Their visit is widely seen as part of ongoing consultations aimed at addressing the issues surrounding the Okuama debacle and restoring peace to the affected communities.
The meeting comes shortly after a Federal High Court reportedly ordered the Nigerian military to release the Okuama detainees who had been held in connection with the crisis. The court’s decision has renewed hopes that dialogue and adherence to the rule of law could pave the way for reconciliation and normalcy.
Although details of the discussions between the monarchs and the Minister of Defence were not immediately made public, observers believe the engagement forms part of broader efforts by traditional institutions and the Federal Government to de-escalate tensions and promote peaceful resolution of the conflict.
The Okuama incident has remained one of the most sensitive security issues in Delta State, attracting widespread concern from community leaders, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders who have consistently called for justice, due process, and lasting peace.
The latest intervention by the Urhobo monarchs underscores the important role of traditional rulers in conflict resolution and peacebuilding, particularly in matters affecting their communities. Many stakeholders are hopeful that the dialogue will contribute to implementing the court’s directives and fostering reconciliation among all parties involved.

Warri Group Withdraws Support for Ereyitomi, Backs Mulade for 2027 Reps Election
By staff Reporter Rukevwe Odeh
A group of stakeholders in Warri has announced its decision to withdraw support for the incumbent member representing the Warri Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Thomas Ereyitomi, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group, while explaining its position, cited what it described as dissatisfaction with the lawmaker’s performance and representation of the constituency.
The stakeholders subsequently declared their support for Comrade Jude Ukori Mulade as their preferred candidate for the 2027 House of Representatives election.
According to the group, its decision followed concerns over the level of representation and development delivered to the constituency under the current administration.
The stakeholders said they were seeking a representative who would be more responsive to the needs of the people and more committed to advancing issues affecting residents across the constituency.
They urged other political stakeholders and eligible voters in Warri to consider Mulade’s candidacy as the 2027 elections approach.
The group’s endorsement adds to the growing political activities and realignments expected to shape the contest for the Warri Federal Constituency seat ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ereyitomi, who currently represents the constituency in the House of Representatives, has yet to publicly respond to the allegations contained in the group’s statement.
