Sokoto Expands Security Drive with ₦27.6bn Operational Assets
By Rukevwe Odeh
The Sokoto State Government has intensified its campaign against insecurity with the deployment of security vehicles and equipment valued at ₦27.6 billion, aimed at strengthening operations against banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes across the state.
The equipment was officially commissioned by the Minister of Defence, Christopher Gwabin Musa, during a ceremony in Sokoto. The newly acquired assets include 62 operational vehicles, 320 motorcycles, Buffalo Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs), bullet-resistant vehicles, bulletproof helmets and vests, night-vision devices, thermal imaging equipment, communication gadgets and other modern security tools designed to improve intelligence gathering and operational efficiency.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu said the state’s location, bordering Zamfara, Katsina and the Republic of Niger, has made several communities vulnerable to criminal attacks. He explained that his administration has therefore prioritised security since assuming office by providing logistical support and other resources to security agencies.
According to the governor, the state had earlier distributed over 200 patrol vehicles and more than 250 motorcycles to security agencies, while also restoring and increasing allowances for personnel serving in frontline communities. He added that the Sokoto State Community Guard Corps was established and equipped with 40 Hilux vehicles and 700 motorcycles to strengthen local security efforts.
Aliyu further disclosed that the government had built military and police barracks, supported the operationalisation of the Nigerian Air Force Base in Sokoto, improved surveillance facilities for the Department of State Services (DSS), and provided housing for security personnel. Additional forward operating bases have also been established in Kagara, Sabon Birni and Isa local government areas to enhance rapid response to threats.
The governor also announced that the latest security equipment would be strategically deployed to identified flashpoints across the state. He revealed that operational vehicles and motorcycles had also been donated to the Federal Ministry of Works to support security along the Sokoto–Badagry Super Highway project.
Speaking at the event, Defence Minister Musa described the investment as evidence of responsible leadership and praised the Sokoto government for consistently supporting security agencies with operational logistics. He expressed confidence that the newly commissioned equipment would improve the effectiveness and safety of personnel engaged in combating criminal activities.
The minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the nation’s security architecture through improved welfare for personnel, better intelligence capabilities, modern technology and enhanced collaboration among security agencies. He also urged officers to make proper use of the newly acquired equipment and called on residents to continue supporting security agencies with credible information.
Representatives of the Office of the National Security Adviser and the Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III commended the Sokoto State Government for its sustained investment in security and encouraged continued cooperation among government, traditional institutions and citizens to promote lasting peace across the state.

He noted that their accomplishments demonstrate the positive impact of the Federal Government’s investment in education and human capital development in the Niger Delta.

Economic Growth Now Depends on States as FG Pushes Governors to Drive Investments
By Rukevwe Odeh
Senior government officials, economic experts and business leaders have urged Nigeria’s state governments to take a more active role in driving economic development, arguing that the country’s recent economic reforms can only deliver meaningful benefits if states attract investments, expand local industries and create employment opportunities.
The call was made during the 2026 Delta State Economic and Investment Summit in Asaba, where participants stressed that while the Federal Government has introduced reforms aimed at stabilising the economy, sub-national governments must now translate those gains into improved living standards for citizens.
Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, said macroeconomic stability alone would not guarantee economic prosperity. According to him, state and local governments are best positioned to unlock development by promoting industries, encouraging investment and supporting businesses based on their comparative advantages.
He noted that recent reforms, including the unification of the foreign exchange market, fuel subsidy removal and tax policy changes, have increased revenue allocations to states and local councils, giving them greater capacity to fund infrastructure, settle salary and pension obligations, and improve public services.
Also speaking at the summit, Director-General of the World Trade Organization, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, encouraged Nigeria and other African countries to take advantage of changes in global trade patterns. She said businesses around the world are diversifying supply chains, creating opportunities for African economies that can provide stable investment environments.
Okonjo-Iweala further highlighted the benefits of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), describing it as a major opportunity for Nigeria to attract manufacturers and investors seeking access to a large regional market.
Vice President Kashim Shettima reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting states pursuing economic reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. He described Delta State as a strategic investment destination with strong potential in agriculture, manufacturing, logistics, energy and the blue economy.
Shettima said Nigeria’s long-term prosperity cannot rely solely on crude oil revenues, stressing the need for economic diversification. He pointed to Delta State’s coastline, ports, gas resources and entrepreneurial population as assets capable of attracting both domestic and foreign investors.
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori unveiled a 100-million-dollar investment fund designed to stimulate business growth and attract new investments into the state, while other speakers called for greater collaboration between governments and the private sector to improve infrastructure, electricity supply and industrial development.
Participants agreed that sustained economic growth will depend on how effectively state governments leverage ongoing reforms to expand productive sectors, create jobs and improve the welfare of citizens.
