PDP Leadership Crisis Threatens Over 1,300 Legislative Seats Ahead of INEC Deadline
By Rukevwe Odeh
The internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised fresh concerns over the party’s readiness for the 2027 general election, with its chances of presenting candidates for 1,393 legislative positions now uncertain.
The dispute, which centres on the party’s leadership, has intensified as rival factions continue to battle over control of the National Working Committee (NWC), particularly the office of the National Secretary. The conflict has created uncertainty over which group has the legal authority to submit candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The opposing camps are aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN). Both groups insist they are the legitimate leadership of the opposition party.
The crisis comes at a critical time as INEC’s nomination timetable for the 2027 elections progresses. Aspirants seeking to contest under the PDP platform are now uncertain whether their nominations will eventually receive legal recognition if the leadership dispute remains unresolved.
The matter is currently before the courts, where the Turaki-led faction is seeking recognition as the authentic leadership of the party. The group is also asking the court to compel INEC to acknowledge its interim National Working Committee for electoral purposes.
In a related legal action, the PDP Board of Trustees, led by Senator Adolphus Wabara, has asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to direct INEC to update its records and recognise the Turaki-led leadership. Judgment in the case is expected in the coming days.
Political analysts believe that any prolonged delay in resolving the dispute could significantly weaken the PDP’s preparations for the 2027 elections and affect its ability to contest all available legislative seats nationwide.
Meanwhile, INEC has announced a 72-hour extension for the submission of presidential and National Assembly candidates, moving the deadline to July 14, 2026, following appeals from political parties experiencing difficulties with the nomination process

Warri Group Withdraws Support for Ereyitomi, Backs Mulade for 2027 Reps Election
By staff Reporter Rukevwe Odeh
A group of stakeholders in Warri has announced its decision to withdraw support for the incumbent member representing the Warri Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Thomas Ereyitomi, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group, while explaining its position, cited what it described as dissatisfaction with the lawmaker’s performance and representation of the constituency.
The stakeholders subsequently declared their support for Comrade Jude Ukori Mulade as their preferred candidate for the 2027 House of Representatives election.
According to the group, its decision followed concerns over the level of representation and development delivered to the constituency under the current administration.
The stakeholders said they were seeking a representative who would be more responsive to the needs of the people and more committed to advancing issues affecting residents across the constituency.
They urged other political stakeholders and eligible voters in Warri to consider Mulade’s candidacy as the 2027 elections approach.
The group’s endorsement adds to the growing political activities and realignments expected to shape the contest for the Warri Federal Constituency seat ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ereyitomi, who currently represents the constituency in the House of Representatives, has yet to publicly respond to the allegations contained in the group’s statement.
