Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has instructed police officers across Nigeria to take decisive action against individuals found carrying illegal firearms, warning that security operatives will no longer tolerate unlawful possession of weapons.

The directive was issued during a security stakeholders’ meeting held at the Benue State Government House in Makurdi, where the police chief addressed concerns over the rising wave of violent attacks and insecurity affecting parts of the country.

Disu explained that the order is backed by Force Order 237, which permits police officers to respond immediately to armed threats without first seeking approval from senior officers when lives are at risk.

According to the IGP, only legally authorised security personnel are permitted to carry firearms. He warned that anyone found bearing illegal weapons would be treated as a serious security threat.

He noted that the decision was driven by the increasing number of police officers and other security personnel who have lost their lives while confronting armed criminals, stressing that the force is determined to strengthen its response to violent crime.

Disu also appealed to Nigerians to support security agencies by providing useful and timely information that could help prevent attacks and aid in the arrest of criminal elements.

Benue State has experienced repeated attacks by armed groups in recent years, leading to loss of lives, destruction of property and the displacement of many residents. The Federal Government has continued to reinforce security operations in the state as part of broader efforts to restore peace and protect communities.
