The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) has arrested a 27-year-old woman, Hafsat Abubakar, in connection with the alleged production and online circulation of a fraudulent notice claiming that OPay Nigeria Limited was planning to shut down its operations.

The arrest was disclosed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anietie Iniedu, during a briefing at the NPF-NCCC headquarters in Abuja.

According to the police, the investigation began after OPay Digital Services Limited submitted a petition on August 31, 2026, seeking the identification and arrest of those responsible for creating and distributing the alleged fake document.

The NPF-NCCC subsequently subjected the document to digital forensic examination. Police said the investigation traced the material to an account on X allegedly operated by Abubakar.

Operatives of the cybercrime centre reportedly arrested the suspect on September 4, 2026. Police identified her as a graduate of Library and Information Science from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

The disputed document, which circulated widely on social media, purportedly announced that OPay would stop processing transactions and account-related services indefinitely from September 1, 2026.

OPay had earlier rejected the notice, describing it as false and reassuring customers that its services remained operational. The company also pointed to several alleged inconsistencies in the document, including an outdated logo, an incorrect spelling of its name and a format that differed from its official communications.

Police said the incident demonstrates the potential dangers of fabricated digital content, particularly where false information could trigger public anxiety, disrupt financial transactions or damage the reputation of businesses.

The police advised members of the public to confirm sensitive information through verified and official channels before sharing such content online.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing, while the police said anyone found to have played a role in the alleged offence would face prosecution after the conclusion of the investigation.

A group of stakeholders in Warri has announced its decision to withdraw support for the incumbent member representing the Warri Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Thomas Ereyitomi, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group, while explaining its position, cited what it described as dissatisfaction with the lawmaker’s performance and representation of the constituency.

The stakeholders subsequently declared their support for Comrade Jude Ukori Mulade as their preferred candidate for the 2027 House of Representatives election.

According to the group, its decision followed concerns over the level of representation and development delivered to the constituency under the current administration.

The stakeholders said they were seeking a representative who would be more responsive to the needs of the people and more committed to advancing issues affecting residents across the constituency.

They urged other political stakeholders and eligible voters in Warri to consider Mulade’s candidacy as the 2027 elections approach.

The group’s endorsement adds to the growing political activities and realignments expected to shape the contest for the Warri Federal Constituency seat ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Ereyitomi, who currently represents the constituency in the House of Representatives, has yet to publicly respond to the allegations contained in the group’s statement.
