Petrol Depot Prices Rise to ₦1,900 Per Litre Despite NNPC Price Reduction
By staff Reporter Rukevwe Odeh
Fuel costs climb in Port Harcourt as depot operators adjust prices, while diesel also reaches ₦1,900 per litre in Warri.
Petrol prices at several Nigerian depots have increased sharply, with some marketers in Port Harcourt raising their rates to ₦1,900 per litre despite efforts by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) to provide relief to consumers.
The increases, recorded on Friday, October 9, affected petroleum depots in Port Harcourt, Lagos, Warri and Calabar, according to industry price checks reported by Vanguard.
The development coincided with a slight rise in international crude oil prices, with Brent crude trading at $104.50 per barrel, compared with $104.28 previously.
Port Harcourt Records Significant Price Increases
In Port Harcourt, NIPCO raised its petrol depot price by ₦170, moving from ₦1,730 to ₦1,900 per litre.
African Terminal, Ascon, Eterna, Gulf Treasure, Ibachem and Ibeto also increased their prices from ₦1,750 to ₦1,900 per litre.
Duport and Integrated recorded smaller increases, with their prices rising from ₦1,750 to ₦1,806 per litre.
In Lagos, Masters adjusted its price from ₦1,303 to ₦1,350 per litre, while Matrix increased its rate from ₦1,330 to ₦1,360.
Sigmund and T.S.L raised their prices from ₦1,300 to ₦1,350 per litre, while NIPCO moved from ₦1,326 to ₦1,350.
In Calabar, Matrix increased its depot price from ₦1,315 to ₦1,370 per litre.
Meanwhile, in Warri, Keonamex, Matrix, Nepal and Parker raised their prices from ₦1,315 to ₦1,360 per litre, while Optima adjusted its rate from ₦1,330 to ₦1,360.
Pump Prices Differ Across Retail Outlets
Despite the increases in depot prices, petrol continued to sell at varying rates across filling stations in Lagos and surrounding areas.
NNPC retail outlets sold petrol at ₦1,360 per litre, while MRS Oil Nigeria charged ₦1,338. The price at 11 Plc stations stood at ₦1,338.80 per litre.
Independent marketers sold the product for between ₦1,368 and ₦1,400 per litre, depending on the location.
The differences between wholesale and retail prices reflect varying pricing decisions across the petroleum supply chain, with some outlets maintaining lower pump prices even as depot costs rise.
Diesel Prices Also Climb in Warri
The diesel market recorded similar increases, particularly in Warri, where Rain Oil and Matrix raised their Automotive Gas Oil prices by ₦180 to ₦1,900 per litre from ₦1,720.
In Port Harcourt, Dangote increased its diesel price from ₦1,702 to ₦1,720 per litre, while Masters raised its rate from ₦1,788 to ₦1,825.
Further increases in diesel prices could place additional pressure on manufacturers, transport operators and businesses that depend on diesel-powered generators and vehicles to sustain their operations.
Higher operating expenses could also affect the cost of transporting goods and delivering services, potentially adding to the financial burden on households and businesses.
International Oil Market Records Mixed Movements
Developments in the international energy market showed different price movements across crude oil and refined petroleum products.
The Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) basket rose from $108.59 to $109.50 per barrel, while the United States benchmark, West Texas Intermediate, increased from $91.49 to $91.73.
WTI Midland also climbed from $92.32 to $92.74 per barrel.
However, Murban crude declined from $110.49 to $108.50 per barrel. Refined gasoline prices fell from $3.316 to $3.293, while heating oil dropped from $4.883 to $4.724.
The mixed movements indicate that international crude prices alone may not explain the latest domestic depot increases. Supply conditions, replacement costs, transportation expenses and individual marketers’ pricing decisions can also influence local prices.
Speaking to Vanguard, Olatide Jeremiah, Chief Executive Officer of Petroleumprice.ng, said Nigeria’s downstream petroleum market would continue to respond to developments in the international oil market.
The latest increases highlight the continuing volatility in Nigeria’s petroleum market, as motorists and businesses contend with differences in depot and retail prices.
With petrol reaching ₦1,900 per litre at several Port Harcourt depots and diesel recording the same price in Warri, consumers will be watching closely to see whether the increases translate into further adjustments at filling stations.

Union Confers ‘Ukodo the Pace Setter’ Title on Governor, Urges Workers to Reciprocate Gesture
The Trade Union Congress (TUC), Delta State Council, has honoured Governor Sheriff Oborevwori with the title “Ukodo the Pace Setter” in recognition of his administration’s decision to institutionalise the payment of 13th-month salaries to public servants.
The union said the initiative would provide additional financial support for workers and their families amid rising living costs and prevailing economic challenges.
In a statement signed by the state chairman, Comrade Wilson Asekutu, the TUC described the legal backing for the additional salary as a demonstration of the government’s recognition of workers’ contributions to the growth and development of Delta State.
According to the labour organisation, the decision reflects the governor’s commitment to policies that deliver tangible benefits to workers and improve their welfare.
The union noted that employees who feel valued and adequately supported are more likely to remain motivated, productive and committed to their responsibilities.
It also reaffirmed its readiness to collaborate with the state government in promoting good governance, sustainable development and improved living conditions for workers and residents.
However, the TUC stressed that its engagement with the government would continue to be guided by mutual respect, constructive engagement and social dialogue.
The labour body urged the Oborevwori administration to sustain consultations with organised labour and implement policies that would strengthen workers’ purchasing power, improve productivity and protect their dignity.
It also called on public servants to reciprocate the government’s gesture through dedication, discipline and improved service delivery.
“Your Excellency, you have taken a bold step in workers’ welfare. You have set a pace. Ukodo the Pace Setter,” Asekutu said on behalf of the union’s leadership and members.
The recognition underscores the TUC’s appreciation of the governor’s decision to provide additional financial benefits to public servants and its call for sustained government-labour cooperation.

FG Pays ₦1.23trn Power Sector Debt, Targets 19,000MW Transmission Capacity
By staff Reporter Rukevwe Odeh
The Federal Government has paid ₦1.23 trillion out of the ₦3.3 trillion owed to electricity generation companies as part of efforts to address financial challenges in the power sector and improve electricity supply across the country.
The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, disclosed this on Wednesday while briefing State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu in Abuja.
Tegbe explained that the payment was aimed at easing liquidity challenges affecting the electricity industry, particularly those linked to gas supply to power plants.
He said the government was also working to expand Nigeria’s electricity transmission capacity from approximately 5,000 megawatts to 19,000 megawatts within the next two years.
According to the minister, the Federal Executive Council had approved three major transmission infrastructure projects to strengthen the national grid and improve electricity delivery.
The projects include the construction of underground and overhead double-circuit transmission lines at the Katampe Transmission Substation in Abuja, the supply of three high-capacity power transformers for the Egbin Transmission Substation serving the Lagos axis, and the upgrade of the 35.6-kilometre McPherson–Shagamu transmission line.
Tegbe said the projects were part of a broader strategy to improve the capacity and reliability of Nigeria’s electricity transmission network.
He added that the government had commenced a technical audit of power infrastructure across three major energy zones to identify ageing facilities requiring repairs, replacement or upgrades.
The zones include the Lagos–Ibadan axis, the Abuja–Kaduna–Karu corridor, and the Benue–Enugu–Port Harcourt corridor.
The minister noted that the Lagos–Ibadan axis alone accounts for approximately 50 per cent of the country’s electricity demand, making infrastructure improvements in the area particularly important.
He also disclosed plans to develop an east-west super grid connecting Sokoto through Funtua, Abuja, Akwanga and Benue to Epe in Lagos State.
The proposed project is expected to strengthen electricity transmission links between different parts of the country and enable more power to reach consumers.
In another development, President Tinubu has directed the Ministry of Power to facilitate the clearance of more than 300 containers of electricity equipment abandoned at ports nationwide, some for as long as 20 years.
Tegbe said technical experts would inspect the containers to determine which equipment remained functional and could be deployed to support the national grid. Obsolete materials would be disposed of appropriately.
He further announced that a new National Control Centre was under construction in Osogbo, Osun State, to replace the existing facility, which has been in operation for 64 years.
The new centre is expected to improve real-time monitoring and coordination of the national electricity grid.
The Federal Government said the measures were part of its broader efforts to address longstanding challenges in the electricity sector, strengthen transmission infrastructure and improve power supply to Nigerian households and businesses.
