PreTinubu Directs Security Agencies to Secure Release of Abducted Borno Children

President assures Borno Governor Zulum of coordinated rescue operations as families continue to demand the safe return of children held in captivity.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, that security agencies will intensify efforts to rescue children abducted from communities in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of the state.

The President gave the assurance during a meeting with Governor Zulum at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where the governor raised concerns over recent attacks and the continued captivity of children abducted from Mussa, Lassa and other affected communities.

Speaking with State House correspondents after the meeting, Zulum said Tinubu had directed relevant security institutions to take necessary measures to secure the victims’ release.

According to the governor, the Nigerian Army, the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) are expected to play key roles in the rescue efforts.

Zulum Highlights Security Improvements

The governor also reported improvements in Borno’s security situation over the past six months, attributing the progress to sustained efforts by security agencies and the state government.

He disclosed that more than two million internally displaced persons had returned to their ancestral communities over the past seven years, although efforts to restore normal life in other affected settlements remain ongoing.

However, Zulum identified Kareto, a community located along the route between Damasak and Gubio, as an area requiring additional security attention because of recurring threats.

He expressed optimism that establishing a military formation in Kareto would strengthen security operations and help protect communities along the approximately 100-kilometre corridor.

Government Plans to Reopen Maiduguri–Damboa–Biu Road

Zulum further disclosed plans to reopen the Maiduguri–Damboa–Biu road, which has remained a major concern for residents and travellers.

According to him, the closure has forced motorists to use alternative routes through Gombe, increasing travel distances to between 600 and 700 kilometres, compared with approximately 200 kilometres along the direct route.

The governor said the Chief of Army Staff had initiated plans to train about 1,000 forest guards, who are expected to be deployed between November and December to support security operations.

He added that the deployment could contribute to improving security along the affected corridor and facilitate the reopening of the road.

Efforts to Restore Affected Communities

The governor also outlined plans to rebuild and restore communities affected by insecurity, including Sabon Gari, while strengthening security in vulnerable parts of Chibok and Askira/Uba local government areas.

He said the state government remained committed to supporting the return of displaced residents and restoring economic and social activities in communities previously affected by attacks.

Oil Exploration Expected to Resume in Borno

In another development, Zulum announced that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) had communicated plans to resume oil exploration activities in Borno and other parts of the North-East.

He explained that exploration had been suspended for approximately one to two years because of logistical challenges.

According to the governor, the company’s Frontier Exploration Services had informed the affected state governments of its intention to restart operations.

The proposed resumption would mark a renewed effort to advance petroleum exploration in the region.

Meanwhile, the immediate priority remains securing the release of the abducted children and improving protection for residents of communities facing persistent security threats.

PAP: Resolve BVN Issues With Banks, Attend Verification, IPDI Tells Aggrieved Delegates

The Ijaw Peoples Development Initiative (IPDI) has urged aggrieved delegates of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) to resolve their Bank Verification Number (BVN) issues with their respective banks and attend the programme’s verification exercise rather than resorting to protests.

The group said BVN-related challenges were not the responsibility of the Presidential Amnesty Office, insisting that affected beneficiaries should address the issues with their banks and present themselves for verification.

In a statement, IPDI maintained that protests would not resolve the alleged payment challenges, stressing that the affected individuals must comply with the verification process to establish their eligibility for stipends.

“No protest can solve your problem. Go and solve your BVN problems with your banks. Your BVN problems were not created by the amnesty office,” the group stated.

IPDI explained that the BVN requirement was introduced through banking policies and government directives, adding that beneficiaries were responsible for ensuring their BVNs were properly linked to their accounts.

The group also commended the PAP office for making provisions for accommodation and transportation to enable individuals in various camps to participate in the verification exercise.

However, IPDI alleged that some camp leaders were threatening protests because they were unwilling to undergo verification, claiming that the exercise could expose irregularities in their beneficiary records.

According to the group, some of the individuals allegedly involved in the planned protests had been using fictitious names to obtain bulk payments fraudulently.

IPDI further claimed that no genuine camp had complained about stipend payments, maintaining that the verification exercise was necessary to establish the authenticity of beneficiaries.

The group stated that the PAP office had demonstrated willingness to address legitimate concerns, urging affected individuals to cooperate with the process.

It also alleged that some camp leaders were resisting verification because they wanted to continue receiving bulk payments for individuals whose names had allegedly been used to collect stipends since 2009 and 2010.

IPDI called on the public and the National Security Adviser (NSA) to disregard what it described as attempts to generate public sympathy through protests.

The group reiterated that beneficiaries with genuine BVN-related problems should resolve them with their banks and participate in the verification exercise to facilitate the resolution of their payment challenges.

Union Confers ‘Ukodo the Pace Setter’ Title on Governor, Urges Workers to Reciprocate Gesture

The Trade Union Congress (TUC), Delta State Council, has honoured Governor Sheriff Oborevwori with the title “Ukodo the Pace Setter” in recognition of his administration’s decision to institutionalise the payment of 13th-month salaries to public servants.

The union said the initiative would provide additional financial support for workers and their families amid rising living costs and prevailing economic challenges.

In a statement signed by the state chairman, Comrade Wilson Asekutu, the TUC described the legal backing for the additional salary as a demonstration of the government’s recognition of workers’ contributions to the growth and development of Delta State.

According to the labour organisation, the decision reflects the governor’s commitment to policies that deliver tangible benefits to workers and improve their welfare.

The union noted that employees who feel valued and adequately supported are more likely to remain motivated, productive and committed to their responsibilities.

It also reaffirmed its readiness to collaborate with the state government in promoting good governance, sustainable development and improved living conditions for workers and residents.

However, the TUC stressed that its engagement with the government would continue to be guided by mutual respect, constructive engagement and social dialogue.

The labour body urged the Oborevwori administration to sustain consultations with organised labour and implement policies that would strengthen workers’ purchasing power, improve productivity and protect their dignity.

It also called on public servants to reciprocate the government’s gesture through dedication, discipline and improved service delivery.

“Your Excellency, you have taken a bold step in workers’ welfare. You have set a pace. Ukodo the Pace Setter,” Asekutu said on behalf of the union’s leadership and members.

The recognition underscores the TUC’s appreciation of the governor’s decision to provide additional financial benefits to public servants and its call for sustained government-labour cooperation.
