1,700 CORPS MEMBERS TAKE OATH OF SERVICE IN BAUCHI
By Ezinne Blessing
No fewer than 1,700 members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) deployed to Bauchi State under the 2026 Batch B Stream I have been sworn in for the mandatory one-year national service.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Bauchi, where officials of the scheme and government representatives urged the corps members to uphold discipline, patriotism, and commitment throughout their service year.
Addressing the corps members, the Bauchi State Coordinator of NYSC, Mr. Umoren Kufre, expressed satisfaction with their conduct since arriving at the orientation camp, noting that they had actively participated in camp activities without any major incidents.
Kufre commended the corps members for demonstrating humility, loyalty, patriotism, and a willingness to serve the nation.
“My dear corps members, within the short time I have interacted with you, I have observed that you are willing and ready to serve our fatherland,” he said.
He advised them to strictly adhere to camp regulations and follow established procedures whenever they have complaints or concerns.
“I urge you to obey all the rules and regulations governing the orientation camp and in case you notice any irregularity, do not take the laws into your hands; always ensure that you follow the proper channel of communication to express your grievances,” he added.
The state coordinator assured participants that NYSC management would continue to provide essential facilities and maintain a conducive environment throughout the orientation programme.
“Your safety and comfort remain our utmost priority,” Kufre stated.
He also acknowledged the continued support of the Bauchi State Government towards the success of the NYSC scheme in the state.
In his remarks, Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, challenged the corps members to become agents of positive change and contribute meaningfully to national development.
Represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Adam Gabarin, the governor urged the newly sworn-in corps members to embrace the objectives of the scheme and work towards promoting national unity.
“I encourage you to start contemplating the initiation of meaningful Community Development Service projects in your areas of primary assignment right from the camp,” the governor said.
“I believe this should occupy your thoughts and prevent you from engaging in inappropriate behaviors while in camp and during your service.”
The oath of allegiance was administered by the Chief Judge of Bauchi State, Justice Rabi Umar, who was represented at the event by Justice Abubakar Yerima.
The ceremony formally marked the commencement of the orientation programme and the one-year national service for the 1,700 corps members deployed to the state.

Nigerian Railway Corporation Continues to Run at a Loss Despite Heavy Government Funding
By Rukevwe odeh
Despite substantial government funding over the years, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) continues to operate at a financial loss and depends heavily on borrowing to sustain its services, even as rail systems worldwide drive economic expansion and industrial development.
Across many developed regions such as Europe, Asia, and North America, rail transport plays a major role in boosting productivity by efficiently moving passengers and freight and supporting national growth. However, Nigeria’s rail system has struggled to achieve similar outcomes despite repeated modernization efforts and large-scale investments.
According to recent disclosures by NRC management, the corporation’s operations remain unprofitable largely due to high running costs, especially fuel expenses, which have made it difficult to maintain consistent service delivery without financial support. As a result, the agency continues to rely on government funding and loans to keep trains running.
Although Nigeria introduced its first railway line in the late 19th century and later established the NRC in the mid-20th century, the system has faced decades of decline, underinvestment, and operational inefficiencies. These challenges have persisted despite ongoing rehabilitation projects and attempts to revive rail transport as a viable alternative to road travel.
Today, while rail transport remains globally recognized as a key driver of economic development, Nigeria’s railway system is still battling financial instability and operational constraints that hinder its full potential.
