Leaders and stakeholders of the indigenous Ijaw and Urhobo communities in the Warri Federal Constituency of Delta State have urged the Presidency to refrain from any form of interference in the ongoing electoral delineation exercise being conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in compliance with a Supreme Court judgment.

The groups, in an open letter dated June 5, 2026 and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, emphasized the need to preserve the constitutional independence of INEC and allow the electoral body to discharge its responsibilities without external influence.

According to the letter, the Supreme Court had directed INEC to undertake a fresh delineation of electoral wards and polling units in the three local government areas that make up the Warri Federal Constituency—Warri South, Warri South-West, and Warri North—to ensure fairness and constitutional compliance in future electoral processes.

The groups recalled that following the apex court’s ruling, INEC convened a stakeholders’ meeting on February 2, 2023, at its Delta State office in Asaba, where the commission reaffirmed its commitment to implementing the judgment in line with Section 287 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

They argued that any attempt by individuals, groups, or government institutions to influence, alter, or obstruct the commission’s implementation of the court’s directive would amount to a direct challenge to both the judiciary and the constitutional mandate of INEC.

The letter stressed that the final decisions of the Supreme Court remain binding on all authorities and persons throughout the federation, adding that the constitutional autonomy granted to INEC must be respected by every arm of government, including the Presidency.

The communities further warned that any perception of presidential interference in the delineation process could undermine public confidence in democratic institutions and create an impression of bias in a matter involving sensitive ethnic and political interests.

They maintained that allowing INEC to complete its assignment independently would strengthen democratic governance, reinforce respect for the rule of law, and ensure lasting peace and stability within the Warri Federal Constituency.

The groups therefore called on President Tinubu to uphold the principles of constitutional democracy by supporting the full implementation of the Supreme Court judgment and permitting INEC to conclude the delineation exercise without undue pressure or external interference.

They reiterated their confidence in the electoral commission and urged all stakeholders to respect the rule of law, embrace peaceful engagement, and prioritize justice and fairness in the overall interest of the people of Warri Federal Constituency and Nigeria’s democratic development.

Speaking during the programme, Amb. Endurance Nwachukwu, Executive Director of Endybekx Initiative for Children and Women Development, urged the boys to develop self-esteem, discipline, and positive values that would help them become responsible leaders in society.

Also speaking at the event, Kelvin Ejumudo, National Secretary of Human Rights Protection Congress and Senior Special Assistant on Human Rights, advised the students to stay away from cultism, rape, and other social vices capable of destroying their future.
