Kefas: Delayed Projects No Longer Excuse for Poor Performance

Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has acknowledged that some government projects may take longer than initially projected, but said his administration would no longer tolerate delays without identifying and addressing the factors responsible.
Kefas said his administration was committed to ensuring that government projects were completed and put to use for the benefit of residents.
The governor, who spoke on the need for improved execution of government programmes, said identifying the causes of delays was critical to ensuring that projects delivered the desired impact.
He noted that his administration inherited significant challenges when it assumed office in 2023, but stressed that the situation could no longer be used as an excuse for poor performance.
According to him, the focus of government must now shift towards faster, measurable and accountable implementation of policies and projects.
“We are building good systems, we are building institutions, we are developing frameworks, and the next phase must be about accelerated and measurable execution,” Kefas said.
The governor also urged residents to closely monitor the activities and expenditure of his administration, stressing that public scrutiny was essential to promoting transparency and good governance.
He said his administration had nothing to fear from questions raised by journalists, civil society organisations, opposition political parties and ordinary citizens.
“We are not afraid of scrutiny because the media must ask questions.
“Civil society must ask questions and the citizens must also ask questions.
“The opposition has a constitutional responsibility to question government, but criticism should be constructive and useful and should be based on facts,” he said.
Kefas further encouraged residents to visit project sites and independently assess the progress and quality of government projects across the state.
He said while government had a responsibility to provide accurate and timely information about its activities, citizens also had a responsibility to take an active interest in how public resources were being utilised.
The governor maintained that greater public participation, transparency and accountability would help strengthen governance and ensure that government projects delivered tangible benefits to the people.

A major search and rescue operation is under way off the coast of northern Cyprus after a boat carrying nearly 270 people capsized in the Mediterranean Sea.
The vessel was reportedly carrying 267 people, including 259 passengers and eight crew members, when it ran into trouble during its journey.
Emergency teams, including coastguard vessels, helicopters and Turkish rescue personnel, were deployed to the area as authorities launched a massive operation to save survivors and locate those still missing.
