The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have called for a significant upward review of the national minimum wage. They said that increased Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) revenues, persistent inflation, and the rising cost of living make higher pay necessary, arguing that workers have continued to lose purchasing power over time.
On the other hand, the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) has cautioned that any adjustment to wages should be guided by economic conditions, productivity levels, and the ability of businesses to remain viable. The group warned that wage decisions driven by political pressure rather than economic realities could lead to business shutdowns, layoffs, and added strain on the economy.long overdue.
In contrast, the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) is urging caution. It says any increase in wages should be based on current economic conditions, productivity levels, and the capacity of businesses to sustain higher payroll costs. NECA warns that if wage hikes are implemented without considering these factors, it could force some companies to downsize, shut down operations, or reduce hiring, which would ultimately worsen unemployment and economic pressure.
Both sides agree that workers’ welfare is important, but they differ on how quickly and how far the minimum wage should be increased.
