Oborevwori Greenlights CNG Buses, Electric Vehicles, Mega Transit Terminal in Delta
By Rukevwe Odeh
The Delta State Government has approved the acquisition of 50 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses, the introduction of electric vehicles into its transport system, and the construction of a modern mega bus terminal in Asaba as part of efforts to improve public transportation across the state.
The approvals were granted during a meeting of the State Executive Council (EXCO) chaired by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, the Commissioner for Transport, Onoriode Agofure, said the decisions were based on the outcome of a transportation assessment conducted in major urban centres, including Asaba, Warri, Ughelli, Agbor, Sapele, Abraka and Oleh. The survey revealed that over 19,000 people commute daily across the state, with about 80 percent relying on public transport, highlighting the growing demand for a more efficient transit system.
Agofure explained that the newly approved CNG buses will serve as the foundation of the state’s MORE Mass Transit Scheme, which is designed to provide residents with affordable, safe and dependable transportation services.
He added that the approval of electric vehicles reflects the administration’s commitment to adopting cleaner and more sustainable transport options while reducing the environmental impact of urban mobility.
The commissioner also disclosed that the government has approved the construction of a state-of-the-art bus terminal in Asaba. The facility is expected to become the central hub for mass transit operations, replacing the numerous roadside and informal motor parks around the Koka Junction area. The project is also expected to improve traffic flow and enhance the city’s appearance.
According to Agofure, land for the terminal has already been secured, while preparations are underway for construction to begin. Once completed, both public and privately operated motor parks in the area will be relocated to the new terminal.
He further revealed that plans are in place to build a similar transport terminal in Warri following approval from the Federal Government.
The projects form part of the Oborevwori administration’s broader strategy to modernise Delta State’s transport infrastructure, improve mobility and deliver a more integrated and efficient public transportation system for residents.
