Political stakeholders across Nigeria have applauded the Court of Appeal for overturning a Federal High Court judgment that ordered the deregistration of five political parties, describing the ruling as a significant boost for constitutional democracy and political inclusion.

In its unanimous decision, the appellate court nullified the earlier judgment that directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to remove the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Action Peoples Party (APP), Action Alliance (AA), Accord Party (AP), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) from the list of registered political parties.

The three-member panel held that the Federal High Court lacked the legal authority to entertain the suit because it was initiated by an entity that had no legal standing. As a result, the appellate court ruled that the proceedings and judgment of the lower court were invalid.

The justices also observed that the trial court failed to properly assess evidence showing that the affected political parties had previously won elective positions, a factor they said should have been considered before any decision on deregistration.

Following the judgment, the Court of Appeal restored the legal status of the five parties and awarded costs against the National Forum of Former Legislators (NFFL), which instituted the suit.

The decision has drawn positive reactions from opposition figures. ADC National Chairman, David Mark, described the judgment as a victory for democracy and the rule of law, praising the appellate court for upholding justice. He urged party members nationwide to remain united and continue working toward the party’s political objectives.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also welcomed the verdict, saying it reaffirmed the judiciary’s commitment to constitutional principles. According to him, democracy thrives when citizens are free to choose among different political parties, warning that state institutions should never be used to suppress political competition.

In Osun State, Accord Party governorship candidate Ademola Adeleke celebrated the ruling, saying it had removed doubts over the party’s legal status ahead of the forthcoming governorship election. He called on supporters to intensify grassroots mobilisation and remain focused on the campaign.

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) equally commended the Court of Appeal, describing the judgment as a reaffirmation of Nigeria’s multi-party democracy. The council, however, renewed its call for the National Judicial Council (NJC) to investigate judicial decisions capable of creating constitutional crises and undermining public confidence in the justice system.

Similarly, the Yoruba Ronu Leadership Forum praised the appellate court, stating that the verdict would strengthen democratic governance and reinforce public trust in the judiciary.

Political observers believe the ruling could significantly influence preparations for the 2027 general elections by preserving the participation of opposition parties in the country’s democratic process.
