Saka Hat-Trick Inspires England to Historic World Cup Third-Place Finish
By Rukevwe Odeh
Bukayo Saka delivered a remarkable performance by scoring three goals as England defeated France 6-4 in an entertaining third-place playoff at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, earning the Three Lions their first World Cup medal since lifting the trophy in 1966.
The bronze-medal clash produced plenty of excitement, with England taking control early before holding off a determined French comeback to seal victory.
Thomas Tuchel’s side wasted little time making an impact, as Declan Rice found the net just two minutes into the contest. Defender Ezri Konsa doubled England’s advantage in the 18th minute before Saka struck twice to hand his team a commanding 4-0 lead before halftime.
France responded strongly after the break, with Kylian Mbappé leading the fightback. The French captain scored twice during the second half to take his overall World Cup tally to 22 goals, setting a new all-time tournament scoring record. Bradley Barcola and Ousmane Dembélé also got on the scoresheet to keep France in contention.
However, England regained control late in the game when Saka converted a penalty to complete his hat-trick. Jude Bellingham then added another goal in stoppage time to wrap up an unforgettable 6-4 victory.
The result secured England’s best World Cup finish in six decades and marked a successful end to their tournament despite missing out on a place in the final. The encounter also set a new record for the highest-scoring third-place playoff in FIFA World Cup history.

By staff Reporter Rukevwe Odeh
A group of stakeholders in Warri has announced its decision to withdraw support for the incumbent member representing the Warri Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Thomas Ereyitomi, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group, while explaining its position, cited what it described as dissatisfaction with the lawmaker’s performance and representation of the constituency.
The stakeholders subsequently declared their support for Comrade Jude Ukori Mulade as their preferred candidate for the 2027 House of Representatives election.
According to the group, its decision followed concerns over the level of representation and development delivered to the constituency under the current administration.
The stakeholders said they were seeking a representative who would be more responsive to the needs of the people and more committed to advancing issues affecting residents across the constituency.
They urged other political stakeholders and eligible voters in Warri to consider Mulade’s candidacy as the 2027 elections approach.
The group’s endorsement adds to the growing political activities and realignments expected to shape the contest for the Warri Federal Constituency seat ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ereyitomi, who currently represents the constituency in the House of Representatives, has yet to publicly respond to the allegations contained in the group’s statement.
