Senate Backs ₦50,000 Penalty for Preaching, Hawking in Commercial Buses
By Rukevwe Odeh
The Nigerian Senate has approved amendments to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Act that introduce stricter penalties for several traffic-related offences, including a proposed ₦50,000 fine for individuals who preach, hawk or engage in trading inside commercial buses. The bill has been passed by the National Assembly but will only become law after it receives presidential assent.
Lawmakers said the measure is intended to reduce distractions for drivers and improve the safety of passengers using public transportation. They believe limiting such activities inside moving vehicles will help lower the risk of road accidents.
The amendment also recommends tougher sanctions for motorists who violate traffic regulations. Driving under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances would attract a ₦100,000 fine, a prison term of up to two years, or both, replacing the existing ₦5,000 penalty.
In addition, motorists who refuse to cooperate with FRSC officers during roadside breath tests conducted on reasonable suspicion could face a ₦50,000 fine, six months’ imprisonment, or both upon conviction.
Other proposed changes include increasing the penalties for speeding, reckless driving, and disobeying traffic lights, road signs and other traffic control devices to as much as ₦100,000. The revised legislation reviews penalties for 52 traffic offences as part of efforts to strengthen road safety enforcement and encourage compliance with traffic laws nationwide.

Warri Group Withdraws Support for Ereyitomi, Backs Mulade for 2027 Reps Election
By staff Reporter Rukevwe Odeh
A group of stakeholders in Warri has announced its decision to withdraw support for the incumbent member representing the Warri Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Thomas Ereyitomi, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group, while explaining its position, cited what it described as dissatisfaction with the lawmaker’s performance and representation of the constituency.
The stakeholders subsequently declared their support for Comrade Jude Ukori Mulade as their preferred candidate for the 2027 House of Representatives election.
According to the group, its decision followed concerns over the level of representation and development delivered to the constituency under the current administration.
The stakeholders said they were seeking a representative who would be more responsive to the needs of the people and more committed to advancing issues affecting residents across the constituency.
They urged other political stakeholders and eligible voters in Warri to consider Mulade’s candidacy as the 2027 elections approach.
The group’s endorsement adds to the growing political activities and realignments expected to shape the contest for the Warri Federal Constituency seat ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ereyitomi, who currently represents the constituency in the House of Representatives, has yet to publicly respond to the allegations contained in the group’s statement.
