Tinubu’s Reforms Raise Nigeria’s Oil Production to 1.824 Million Barrels Daily – Lokpobiri
By staff Reporter Rukevwe Odeh
Nigeria’s crude oil production has increased by more than 80 per cent since President Bola Tinubu assumed office in 2023, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, has disclosed.
Lokpobiri attributed the improvement to reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration, increased investment and renewed activities across the oil and gas industry.
The minister made the disclosure in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, during a breakfast meeting with media practitioners led by Elder Asu Beks. The meeting focused on assessing the achievements of the Federal Government’s petroleum sector reforms.
According to him, Nigeria’s daily crude oil and condensate production, which stood below one million barrels when the present administration took over in 2023, has risen to 1.824 million barrels.
He said the figure was contained in the latest weekly report of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), noting that condensate was included in the reported volume.
Lokpobiri explained that the progress was achieved through collaboration among industry stakeholders and government efforts to address longstanding challenges affecting petroleum production.
He also revealed that the number of operational drilling rigs had increased from fewer than 10 to over 70, describing the development as evidence of renewed exploration and investment activities.
The minister noted that drilling costs remained substantial, estimating onshore operations at between $25 million and $30 million per well, while offshore drilling could cost between $80 million and $100 million.
On investment, Lokpobiri claimed that Nigeria now attracts approximately 60 per cent of oil and gas investments flowing into Africa, following years of limited investment in the country’s petroleum industry.
He identified the Federal Government’s approval of the divestment deals involving Shell and Renaissance, as well as ExxonMobil and Seplat, as some of the developments helping to stimulate fresh investments.
According to him, the transactions have also created opportunities for investment in major oil projects, including Bonga North, Bonga South-West and Zabazaba.
He further disclosed that indigenous petroleum companies now contribute about 60 per cent of Nigeria’s crude oil production, representing a significant shift from the period when international oil companies controlled approximately 90 per cent of output.
Subsidy Removal and Increased Government Revenue
Speaking on the removal of petrol subsidy, Lokpobiri defended the policy, describing it as necessary to reduce the financial burden on the Federal Government.
He said Nigeria previously spent about N18.4 billion daily on fuel subsidy when the exchange rate was approximately N448 to the dollar.
The minister estimated that the expenditure amounted to about $15 billion annually, which would have translated to roughly N21 trillion at an exchange rate of N1,400 to the dollar.
He argued that ending the subsidy had expanded the revenue available for distribution among the federal, state and local governments through the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).
Lokpobiri said monthly FAAC allocations had increased from below N600 billion to more than N2 trillion, adding that the development had helped 27 states that previously experienced difficulties paying workers’ salaries to meet their obligations and embark on development projects.
He also highlighted improvements in the financial operations of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), stating that the company now declares profits, contributes to the Federation Account and meets its financial commitments.
The minister referenced Section 205 of the Petroleum Industry Act, signed by former President Muhammadu Buhari, noting that the legislation provides for market-based pricing in the petroleum sector.
He added that the removal of price controls had created opportunities for the Dangote Refinery to supply aviation fuel to European markets.
Lokpobiri also maintained that Nigeria had previously been indirectly subsidising petrol consumption in some West and Central African countries before the policy was discontinued.
Lokpobiri Speaks on Bayelsa’s Atala Oil Field
Addressing the controversy surrounding the Atala oil field in Bayelsa State, the minister said the state government had pursued legal action over the matter but lost its cases at both the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal.
He, however, disclosed that discussions were ongoing to explore a political resolution that could facilitate the mobilisation of funds for the development of the oil field.
On Oil Mining Lease 240 (OML 240), which he described as belonging to Bayelsa State, Lokpobiri explained that the oil block was awarded more than 20 years ago and that its licence had since expired.
He added that a Norwegian company had been engaged to undertake the development of the asset.

Soludo Inaugurates Tinubu’s 2027 Campaign Council, Woos South-East
By staff Reporter Rukevwe Odeh
Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has inaugurated a joint campaign council of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to mobilise support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
The inauguration, held on Sunday at the International Convention Centre in Awka, brought together political leaders, serving and former lawmakers, local government chairmen and other stakeholders from both parties.
Soludo urged political actors across the South-East to unite behind Tinubu, stressing the need to take the campaign to grassroots communities, wards and polling units.
He described the initiative as an inclusive political movement, calling on APGA and APC members to work together to secure the President’s re-election.
The governor maintained that continued cooperation with the Federal Government was crucial to the South-East’s political relevance and development.
According to him, the region stands to benefit from stronger ties with the Federal Government, particularly in infrastructure development and economic growth.
Soludo also urged Anambra residents to vote massively for Tinubu in 2027, noting that the President had continued to support the region despite its voting pattern in the 2023 presidential election.
He attributed infrastructure development, increased federal allocations to states and improved economic stability to Tinubu’s reforms.
The governor further stressed that major projects, including railways and gas pipelines, required collaboration between state and federal governments.
The campaign council was formally inaugurated after members sang Tinubu’s campaign slogan, “On the mandate we shall stand.”
Soludo said the full membership and structure of the council would be unveiled soon.
The development comes as political parties and their supporters intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Atiku Faults Tinubu Over Power Crisis, Demands Stable Electricity
By staff Reporter Rukevwe Odeh
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration over Nigeria’s worsening electricity crisis, accusing the Federal Government of failing to deliver reliable power despite increased electricity tariffs.
Atiku, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, said Nigerians were increasingly frustrated by persistent power failures, while households and businesses continued to struggle with inadequate electricity supply.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his Senior Media Aide, Phrank Shuaibu, the former Vice-President urged the Tinubu administration to stop politicising the power crisis and focus on providing stable electricity.
He accused the government of offering repeated explanations without addressing the challenges confronting electricity consumers.
“Tinubu’s electricity excuses cannot light a single home. Nigerians need power, not excuses,” he said.
Atiku also criticised the electricity tariff structure, arguing that consumers continued to pay different rates under Bands A, B, C, D and E despite unreliable power supply.
He cited Band A customers in some areas as paying about ₦209.50 per kilowatt-hour before Value Added Tax (VAT), describing the situation as an additional financial burden on households and businesses.
According to him, Nigerians should not be forced to pay higher electricity bills while receiving inadequate power supply.
The ADC chieftain further questioned the Federal Government’s plan to end electricity subsidies from 2027, despite assurances that there would be no immediate increase in tariffs.
He demanded clarification on how the proposed subsidy removal would affect electricity bills, particularly for households and businesses already struggling with rising energy costs.
Atiku maintained that the government must prioritise reliable electricity supply and address the financial challenges facing consumers.
He called on the Tinubu administration to move beyond explanations and deliver measurable improvements in the power sector.
