Abia Governor Otti Files ₦5bn Defamation Suit Against APC Spokesman
By Rukevwe Odeh
Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has taken legal action against the state’s All Progressives Congress (APC) Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru, demanding ₦5 billion in damages over alleged defamatory statements shared on Facebook.
The lawsuit, filed before the High Court in Umuahia, accuses Aguoru of publishing several posts that allegedly portrayed the governor as corrupt and guilty of abusing public office.
According to court documents, the disputed publications alleged that Otti diverted public funds, interfered in the affairs of another political party, manipulated the judiciary, engaged in political inducement, and intimidated public institutions.
Governor Otti rejected the allegations, describing them as false, malicious, and damaging to his reputation.
In the suit, the governor is asking the court to declare the Facebook posts defamatory, compel the defendant to withdraw the publications, and issue a public apology. He is also seeking a perpetual injunction preventing Aguoru from making similar statements in the future, in addition to ₦5 billion in general damages and the cost of the legal proceedings.
The case is now before the Abia State High Court, where the allegations and the governor’s claims are expected to be determined.
Meanwhile, journalist and activist Fejiro Oliver reacted to the development, saying he supports the decision to pursue a civil defamation case rather than relying on criminal charges under the Cybercrimes Act. He argued that individuals who believe they have been defamed should seek legal remedies through the courts instead of using criminal prosecution.
The matter remains pending before the court, and no judicial determination has yet been made on the allegations raised by either party.

By staff Reporter Rukevwe Odeh
A group of stakeholders in Warri has announced its decision to withdraw support for the incumbent member representing the Warri Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Thomas Ereyitomi, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group, while explaining its position, cited what it described as dissatisfaction with the lawmaker’s performance and representation of the constituency.
The stakeholders subsequently declared their support for Comrade Jude Ukori Mulade as their preferred candidate for the 2027 House of Representatives election.
According to the group, its decision followed concerns over the level of representation and development delivered to the constituency under the current administration.
The stakeholders said they were seeking a representative who would be more responsive to the needs of the people and more committed to advancing issues affecting residents across the constituency.
They urged other political stakeholders and eligible voters in Warri to consider Mulade’s candidacy as the 2027 elections approach.
The group’s endorsement adds to the growing political activities and realignments expected to shape the contest for the Warri Federal Constituency seat ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ereyitomi, who currently represents the constituency in the House of Representatives, has yet to publicly respond to the allegations contained in the group’s statement.
