FG Demands Comprehensive Investigation Into Nigerian’s Death During South African Police Operation
By Derick Peretengboro
The Federal Government has called on South African authorities to carry out a thorough and transparent investigation into the death of a Nigerian citizen during a police operation in Bellville, Cape Town.
In a statement issued by the Consulate General of Nigeria in Johannesburg, the government condemned the circumstances surrounding the death of Ibeh Chika Simon, describing the incident as deeply disturbing and unacceptable. The operation, which took place on July 23, also left another Nigerian, Egwabor Patrick Chuks, with severe injuries. He is currently receiving medical treatment.
The Nigerian mission expressed concern over what it described as the continued pattern of alleged excessive force and misconduct involving foreign nationals in South Africa. It stressed that every individual, regardless of nationality, deserves protection under the law and should not be deprived of their right to life or due process.
The consulate urged South African authorities to conduct an independent and transparent investigation, identify those responsible, and ensure they are held accountable in accordance with the law.
While reaffirming that Nigerians living in South Africa are expected to respect the country’s laws, the Federal Government maintained that allegations of criminal conduct should never result in unlawful killings or excessive use of force.
The mission also appealed to members of the Nigerian community in South Africa to remain calm and cooperate with lawful authorities while diplomatic efforts continue to seek justice for the deceased.
It extended condolences to the family of Ibeh Chika Simon and wished Egwabor Patrick Chuks a speedy recovery, assuring that the Nigerian government would continue to monitor developments and pursue justice through diplomatic channels.
