Inflation Slows Marginally in June Despite Persistent Food Price Increases

Nigeria’s annual inflation rate recorded a slight decline in June 2026, falling to 15.91 percent from 15.93 percent in May, according to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The marginal drop signals that the country’s gradual slowdown in overall inflation is continuing, although food prices remain a major burden for many households.
The report showed that inflation was significantly lower than the 25.29 percent recorded in June 2025, reflecting a notable easing in year-on-year price growth. On a monthly basis, headline inflation also slowed to 1.66 percent in June, compared with 1.75 percent in May.
Despite the improvement in the overall inflation rate, food inflation continued to rise. Annual food inflation climbed to 17.52 percent, while the monthly food inflation rate accelerated to 3.75 percent from 2.98 percent in the previous month, indicating that the prices of essential food items continued to increase and place pressure on consumers.
The NBS data further revealed that urban areas posted a year-on-year inflation rate of 16.08 percent, with monthly urban inflation increasing to 2.13 percent. Rural inflation stood at 15.48 percent, while the monthly rural rate slowed to 0.52 percent from 1.17 percent recorded in May.
Core inflation, which excludes farm produce and energy prices, also moderated. It stood at 15.92 percent year-on-year in June, while the monthly figure declined to 1.66 percent, suggesting a broader easing in underlying price pressures.
Across the states, Kogi recorded the highest annual food inflation rate, followed by Niger and Benue. Meanwhile, Katsina, Rivers and Imo experienced the slowest year-on-year increases in food prices. On a month-to-month basis, Katsina recorded the sharpest rise in food inflation, while Borno, Benue and Bayelsa saw the slowest monthly increases.
Economic analysts say the continued moderation in headline and core inflation may encourage the Central Bank of Nigeria to maintain its current monetary policy. However, they cautioned that persistently high food prices remain a serious challenge for household purchasing power and the cost of living, with attention focused on whether exchange-rate stability and improved agricultural output can help sustain the downward inflation trend in the months ahead.

A group of stakeholders in Warri has announced its decision to withdraw support for the incumbent member representing the Warri Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Thomas Ereyitomi, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group, while explaining its position, cited what it described as dissatisfaction with the lawmaker’s performance and representation of the constituency.
The stakeholders subsequently declared their support for Comrade Jude Ukori Mulade as their preferred candidate for the 2027 House of Representatives election.
According to the group, its decision followed concerns over the level of representation and development delivered to the constituency under the current administration.
The stakeholders said they were seeking a representative who would be more responsive to the needs of the people and more committed to advancing issues affecting residents across the constituency.
They urged other political stakeholders and eligible voters in Warri to consider Mulade’s candidacy as the 2027 elections approach.
The group’s endorsement adds to the growing political activities and realignments expected to shape the contest for the Warri Federal Constituency seat ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ereyitomi, who currently represents the constituency in the House of Representatives, has yet to publicly respond to the allegations contained in the group’s statement.

Residents and road users along the Warri Airport Road, particularly the section near Federal Government College in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State, have continued to contend with recurring flooding despite years of road construction and rehabilitation efforts.
The affected stretch is frequently submerged following heavy rainfall, with inadequate drainage identified as a major factor contributing to the persistent flooding.
The recurring situation has raised concerns among motorists, residents and other road users, who say the condition of the road continues to disrupt movement and create difficulties for commuters whenever there is significant rainfall.
The development has also renewed calls for attention to the drainage system along the route, with residents hoping that a lasting solution will be implemented to prevent the road from repeatedly becoming flooded.

A heavy downpour has left the popular NNPC Housing Complex Road, also known as Ekpan Link Road, submerged in floodwater in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.
The rainfall caused significant water accumulation along the busy road, affecting movement and creating difficulties for motorists and other road users.
The condition of the road has renewed concerns over flooding and drainage challenges in the area, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
Residents and commuters are expected to exercise caution while using the affected route as efforts to manage the situation continue.
