Lagos Faces Shortage of 40,000 Doctors, Nurses as Sanwo-Olu Seeks ₦100bn Health Funding Boost

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has raised concerns over the growing shortage of healthcare professionals in the state, revealing that Lagos requires an additional 40,000 doctors and 40,000 nurses to adequately meet the medical needs of its rapidly expanding population.
The governor made the disclosure during the opening ceremony of the second Eko Health Convention held in Victoria Island, Lagos. He noted that the shortage of qualified medical personnel, alongside inadequate funding, remains one of the biggest obstacles to delivering quality healthcare services across the state.
According to Sanwo-Olu, Lagos currently has only about 7,000 doctors, a figure he described as grossly insufficient for the state’s population. He said the situation has placed enormous pressure on available health workers, with many doctors handling workloads far beyond normal capacity.
The governor also disclosed that the state’s health sector requires at least ₦100 billion above the current budget allocation to effectively address its pressing needs. He explained that declining donor support has further widened the funding gap, making it necessary for government and private stakeholders to collaborate in sustaining healthcare services.
To tackle the manpower deficit, Sanwo-Olu said the state government has intensified recruitment of healthcare workers, improved staff welfare, provided accommodation for medical personnel and is advancing plans to establish a University of Medicine and Health Sciences to strengthen the training of future professionals.
He further highlighted progress in the state’s health insurance programme, Ilera Eko, noting that more than 1.5 million residents have enrolled. He described the scheme as a key component of the government’s strategy to improve access to affordable healthcare for Lagosians.
The governor added that the state is investing heavily in digital healthcare systems, including electronic medical records and technology-driven health management tools, to improve patient care, disease surveillance and long-term planning.
Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a resilient healthcare system capable of serving the state’s growing population, stressing that the ongoing reforms are designed to create lasting improvements rather than temporary interventions.
