The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has approved the elevation of 68 legal practitioners to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) for the 2026 conferment.

The decision was reached during the committee’s 174th plenary meeting chaired by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun. The successful candidates comprise 67 legal practitioners from the Bar and one academic, Professor Nnamdi Onyeka Obiaraeri, who emerged as the only successful applicant from the academic category.

According to the LPPC, the SAN title is awarded to lawyers who have distinguished themselves through exceptional advocacy, legal scholarship, and outstanding contributions to the legal profession.

The committee directed all successful candidates to participate in the mandatory pre-swearing-in induction programme, stressing that attendance is a requirement before the official conferment of the rank. The date for the induction programme will be announced by the committee, while the swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for October 12, 2026.

The LPPC also reminded the newly elevated lawyers to comply with the provisions of the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Guidelines and the Rules of Professional Conduct by refraining from publishing or encouraging congratulatory advertisements, goodwill messages, or notices relating to their elevation. It warned that any breach of the regulations could attract disciplinary measures.

The 2026 list includes four female legal practitioners among the successful advocates, reflecting continued female representation in the country’s highest legal honour.

The full list of successful applicants has been released by the LPPC.
