Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has reaffirmed his administration’s determination to secure the freedom of pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area, declaring that he is prepared to make any sacrifice necessary to ensure their safe return.

The governor made the statement while receiving a delegation of peaceful protesters led by social commentator and activist Martins Vincent Otse at his residence in Ibadan. The protesters had gathered to express concern over the prolonged captivity of the victims and to urge authorities to intensify rescue efforts.

Addressing the group, Makinde assured residents that the state government, in collaboration with security agencies, is deploying all available resources to rescue the abducted schoolchildren and their teachers. According to him, the ongoing operations are being carefully coordinated to avoid further loss of lives and to ensure that the victims are returned safely to their families.

The governor noted that although details of the rescue mission cannot be disclosed for security reasons, the government remains actively engaged in efforts to locate and free the captives. He stressed that the situation continues to weigh heavily on the state government and affected families.

Makinde revealed that intelligence reports available to the government indicate that no additional casualties have been recorded among the abductees after the tragic death of a mathematics teacher shortly after the incident. He emphasized that preserving the lives of the remaining victims remains a top priority.

The governor also acknowledged the growing public frustration over the incident, describing the abduction as one of the most painful security challenges confronting the state. He commended citizens and advocacy groups for keeping attention focused on the plight of the victims and their families.

Speaking further, Makinde highlighted the limitations faced by state governments in directing federal security agencies, noting that governors do not have direct operational control over the police and military. Nevertheless, he said his administration has continued to strengthen local security structures, including support for the Western Nigeria Security Network, popularly known as Amotekun, to complement conventional security efforts.

The abduction, which occurred several weeks ago, has sparked widespread concern across Oyo State and beyond. Civil society groups, community leaders, and youth organizations have repeatedly called for intensified rescue operations as families of the victims continue to await positive news. Reports indicate that dozens of pupils and teachers were taken during the attack, making it one of the most disturbing school-related security incidents in the state this year.

In recent weeks, the Oyo State Government has introduced additional security measures aimed at tackling criminal activities, including restrictions on nighttime commercial motorcycle operations and increased surveillance in vulnerable communities. Authorities believe these measures will help strengthen security and prevent future incidents.

Residents, community stakeholders, and concerned Nigerians have continued to appeal for the immediate release of the abducted pupils and teachers, expressing hope that ongoing security operations will soon bring an end to their ordeal and reunite them with their loved ones.

Ogra Defends Judges’ Housing Project, Reminds Obi of Similar Initiative in Anambra

Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Digital and New Media, O’Tegra Ogra, has challenged recent comments by Peter Obi regarding the Federal Government’s construction of residential quarters for judicial officers in Abuja.

Ogra argued that Obi, who previously governed Anambra State, implemented a similar project during his administration. According to him, it is inconsistent to condemn a policy at the federal level that mirrors an initiative once celebrated in Anambra.

In a statement shared on social media, the presidential aide questioned Obi’s position, recalling that the former governor commissioned housing facilities for judges in 2013 and even pledged to expand the project. He maintained that if such efforts were considered beneficial to the judiciary at the state level, they should not suddenly be viewed as an attempt to undermine judicial independence when undertaken by the Federal Government.

Ogra further stressed that providing adequate accommodation and welfare for judicial officers can strengthen, rather than weaken, the justice system. He noted that poor living and working conditions may expose judges to undue pressure and external influence, while improved welfare helps safeguard their independence and effectiveness.

The aide urged political leaders to maintain consistency in their positions and avoid what he described as selective criticism driven by partisan considerations. He argued that policies aimed at improving the welfare of judges should be assessed on their merits, regardless of who initiates them.

Despite substantial government funding over the years, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) continues to operate at a financial loss and depends heavily on borrowing to sustain its services, even as rail systems worldwide drive economic expansion and industrial development.
Across many developed regions such as Europe, Asia, and North America, rail transport plays a major role in boosting productivity by efficiently moving passengers and freight and supporting national growth. However, Nigeria’s rail system has struggled to achieve similar outcomes despite repeated modernization efforts and large-scale investments.
According to recent disclosures by NRC management, the corporation’s operations remain unprofitable largely due to high running costs, especially fuel expenses, which have made it difficult to maintain consistent service delivery without financial support. As a result, the agency continues to rely on government funding and loans to keep trains running.
Although Nigeria introduced its first railway line in the late 19th century and later established the NRC in the mid-20th century, the system has faced decades of decline, underinvestment, and operational inefficiencies. These challenges have persisted despite ongoing rehabilitation projects and attempts to revive rail transport as a viable alternative to road travel.
Today, while rail transport remains globally recognized as a key driver of economic development, Nigeria’s railway system is still battling financial instability and operational constraints that hinder its full potential.
